At Restoration Builders, we know how important it is to protect your home from the elements. That’s why we were happy to help this homeowner who needed:
- a new roof
- new copper flashing for the chimney
- and window well pans
Hail can cause serious damage to your roof, such as cracking shingles, exposing the underlayment, and creating leaks. Copper flashing is used to seal the gaps between the roof and the walls, preventing water from seeping in. Window well pans are metal covers that protect the window wells from debris and water accumulation. By installing these products, we were able to restore the beauty and functionality of this home
To fix the roof, the following steps were taken:
- Replaced the chimney flashing with new copper flashing that added a unique design element as well as functionality.
- Removed all felt and shingles.
- Replaced the old felt with TopShield EL 30, a synthetic roof underlayment that provides resistance to the elements.
- Replaced the shingles with Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration Algae Resistant shingles in Teak color.
First, we replaced the chimney flashing with new copper flashing.
One of the first steps we took to fix the house was to replace the chimney flashing with new copper flashing. Flashing is a thin sheet of metal that covers the joints between the roof and the chimney, preventing water from seeping in and causing damage. The old flashing was worn out and rusty, and it did not match the style of the house. We decided to use copper flashing because it is durable, corrosion-resistant, and aesthetically pleasing. Copper flashing also has a natural patina that develops over time, giving it a distinctive look. We installed the copper flashing in a way that complemented the shape and size of the chimney and created a unique design element. The new copper flashing not only improved the appearance of the house but also enhanced its functionality by providing a reliable seal against water intrusion.
Next, we removed all the felt and shingles from the roof.
The next step we took to fix the house was to remove all felt and shingles from the roof. Felt is a layer of asphalt-saturated paper that serves as an underlayment for the shingles. Shingles are overlapping pieces of asphalt or fiberglass that cover the roof and protect it from weather and UV rays. The old felt and shingles were damaged by hail, wind, and sun exposure, and they had lost their effectiveness and appeal. We carefully removed all felt and shingles from the roof using specialized tools and equipment. We also inspected the condition of the roof deck and made any necessary repairs. We disposed of the old materials in an environmentally friendly manner, following the local regulations and guidelines.
Then, we replaced the old felt with TopShield EL 30.
After removing all felt and shingles from the roof, we replaced the old felt with TopShield EL 30, a synthetic roof underlayment that provides resistance to the elements. TopShield EL 30 is a high-performance product that consists of a polymeric scrim that imparts strength and a textured fabric on the upper surface that provides walkability which makes it safer for our team during the installation. TopShield EL 30 also has a high tear strength and a UV coating that protects it from sun exposure. It acts as a secondary barrier against water infiltration and helps extend the life of the roof system. We installed TopShield EL 30 over the entire roof deck, making sure to overlap the edges and secure it with fasteners.
Finally, we installed Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration Algae Resistant shingles.
The final step we took to fix the house was to replace the shingles with Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration Algae Resistant shingles in Teak color. This style of shingle has a color platform that gives them a dramatic color contrast and dimension along with StreakGuard Algae Resistance Protection to provide protection against black streaks appearing for years to come. These shingles also have SureNail Technology that enhances their performance and durability. They have a specially formulated nailing zone that ensures consistent fastening and optimal wind resistance. They also have a Class A fire rating and a limited lifetime warranty. We installed these shingles over TopShield EL 30, following the manufacturer’s instructions and recommendations. We chose the Teak color because it matched well with the copper flashing and the brick wall of the house.
